In a brush of irony I’m reading this post whilst off the bike for 12 weeks with a broken hip. I surprised doctors by wheeling into A&E perhaps 30 years too early than when you’d probably expect to have this sort of injury but the care and efficiency shown both during operation and during my recovery have been second to none. It is difficult having to slow down and take stock during recovery but I know that I’ll be back soon. Perhaps the most poignant moment I have taken from the whole experience is sitting in my hospital bed whilst the patient across from me, a husband and father, goes over the details of a biopsy for a potential brain tumour with his doctor. It’s these moments you realise the inherent fragility of life and the experiences we have within it. I’ll take care in future but I know it can be worse.
